Artwork Digitisation

PureFineArt through a strictly controlled process produces cutting edge digitisation for any kind of artwork. Using new digital techniques, and PureFineArt's custom workflows to capture every detail of the original artwork, in some cases capturing information that is so fine its not visible to the naked eye. The advantages over drum scanning are we can reproduce any artwork, for example oil paintings with a varnish surface that may crack on a drum scan, or sizes up to 2.5m x 2.5m which is not practical for the drum scan, also fully mounted artwork without the need to remove the frames.

Technical Capture

Our philosophy is simple, capture in the image in the highest quality possible (far exceeding professional printing technology can process today) then convert to match the capability of the printing technology being used, this yields the highest possible quality output.

Raw Capture parameters

Max raw image width 2912px

Equivalent of a 13Mp camera

Max raw image height 4368px

Image resolution 360dpi

Exceeding   standard industry printing of 300dpi

Image Colour Space - ProPhoto RGB

A truly massive colour spectrum, much larger than any current output device. This ensures accurate capture of delicate hues and tones in the original artwork.

Bit depth 16bit

Native colour space, normally 8bit for commercial printing.

Professional Schnieder Reproduction Lens

Calibrated to capture a flat plane surface, minimising distortions, and chromatic aberrations. Very high spectral transmittance for a wide wavelength of light to ensure accurate colour.

Polarisation filtration where required

This is needed where the original artwork has a highly reflective surface to remove any possible highlights or reflections that may degrade the final image e.g. varnished oil paintings.

Elinchrom Pro Lighting source

Flat even lighting with digital controlled flash duration, power and stabilised colour temperature. This ensures consistency for every image. The colour temperature is calibrated with industry standard Kodak 18% pure grey target for every session.

Environment - Specialised reproduction studio

This includes air filters to reduce airborne dust to a minimum. Complete darkroom environment to ensure no un-calibrated light reaches the artwork. Solid concrete floor to ensure vibrations do not impact image sharpness.

Digital Sensor

The sensor is optically cleaned for every session to ensure any particles do not show in the final image. ISO 50 is used (rare on a digital sensor) to ensure there are no noise artifacts in the final captured image. All images are captured in RAW format for the widest dynamic range of contrast. The camera characteristics are specifically calibrated to the software environment using custom colour profiles to ensure a consistent colour balance throughout the workflow.

£10 per image

Its through the mature and repeatable processes and technical excellence that PureFineArt can achieve the highest quality in reproductions and digitisation.

Post Processing

All processing is done with Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Camera RAW processor. The captured image is taken under perfect conditions, but artwork is rarely viewed under perfect conditions. PureFineArt applies custom techniques to ensure the digital artwork looks the same as the original image under normal lighting conditions, correcting for daylight colour balance etc... Then finally preparing for the output device, converting colour profiles to output printing device, to perfectly match and compensate for the printing process. Custom hand processing is required for all repro work to ensure the output is optimised for however the image is to be viewed.

The Final Product

A CD or DVD with the full size original images (TIFF approx 100Mb), sized and colour corrected versions for professional printing, and web corrected versions for use on a the web and viewing on a screen.

PureFineArt will archive the images in long term storage (indefinitely) in case you ever need to retrieve the original files. The images will be solely used for your reproductions, will not be sold or used for advertising in any way. You retain the copyright for all artwork.
